Tweaks for Freaks...
I hope you've been having fun with this game - just a note to say that after further playing, I've made some minor tweaks and updated the downloads for both Painflail Core Rules and Painflail Quest.
The changes are as follows:
PAINFLAIL CORE RULES
+ Behaviour Cards tweak: Generic Enemies now use their special attacks on 5 or 6.
PAINFLAIL QUEST
+ Imminent danger countdowns rules updated to suggest that countdowns should be set to the dungeon DR. So in Well of Antilux (Dungeon DR 8) the countdown has 8 circles, rather than the generic 6. I found this worked a lot better.
+ The countdown circles have now been re-located from the Crawlseet to the Dungeon Mapping sheets.
+ The Stock Common and Stock Rare Encounters have also had the number of creatures appearing updated - this is also reflected in a new version of the Area Generator application.
I've been really enjoying my playthroughs of Painflail Quest - particularly the emergent narratives and situations that come up. In my Well of Antilux playthough yesterday, one PC crossed the Mire of Misery, and encountered an angered NPC right in front of them in the next area. There was a fight, during which the PC drowned in the mire. The NPC then attempted to cross the mire to attack the party and also drowned. The rest of the group, not wanting to cross the mire, explored all other possible areas, eventually coming do a dead end, and forcing them to make the fatal trek - losing one more PC on the way...
While putting this update together, I spent some time on what is a well-known fools errant ATTEMPTING TO BALANCE MORK BORG. Obviously things are so swingy -your group can be a pathetic crew, armed with improvised weapons and no armour... or you might have a couple of guys with ridiculously OP moves who mince everything in their path...
In some ways this doesn't matter too much - Painflail Quest deliberately has some moments of instadeath to stop you getting too complacent with strong characters. I'm no statistician, but I was interested in what a 'fair' fight could possibly be, so generated 1,000 generic scvm and examined the averages. I then considered what 'average' one-on-one combat looked like, as well as other ranks. Finally, I added some suggested numbers for a 'fair' fight, and equivalent dice rolls. Here are the results, which helped me tweak the Stock encounter tables in Painflail Quest. Of course, a lot of MB content will increase the potential number of enemies by a third, or even double - although in this instance, I am more interested in the slow attrition of HP, Omens, Powers, etc than a swift TPK ;)
Finally, I'm off to Sweden on business for the next week, but I just wanted to say that I will be adding additional adventures to Painflail Quest each month from July, probably until December, to create a mini-campaign. Here's a preview of what's coming in July... with a village-crawl coming up in August!
Until then, if anyone has any PF/PFQ anecdotes, questions, suggestions, or rules clarifications, let me know!!
